FSI Develops Confident Speakers with its Course on Speech Writing and Delivery

The Foreign Service Institute (FSI) conducted the Course on Speech Writing and Delivery (CSWD) on 28 October 2020, with personnel from the Department of Foreign Affairs’ (DFA’s) Home Office and Consular Offices participating.

CSWD is the last Course under the three-part English Language Training Program for DFA personnel. This Course intends to build the participants’ confidence in oral communication through writing and delivering speeches.

With the Institute’s shift to full online learning, Professor Melanie M. Moraga-Leaño of the University of the Philippines Diliman conducted the Course through 100% synchronous and asynchronous modes of teaching. The participants—mostly from the Consular Offices: NCR West, NCR Northeast, NCR South, Calasiao, La Union, Santiago, Pampanga, Malolos, Angeles, Puerto Princesa, and Baguio—took part in lecture-discussions, speech writing, and speech delivery workshops via Google Meet and Google Classroom.

Prof. Leaño emphasized that the skill in public speaking is a powerful tool for individuals, and expressed hope that the Course participants become empowered as they learn to become credible and trustworthy public speakers.

The topics discussed during the course included discussions on the nature and importance of public communication, types of speeches, ethics in public communication, how to manage communication apprehension, how to craft speeches with varying purposes, and delivering and evaluating effective speeches.

CSWD graduates had also completed the required English Language Review Course (ELRC) in July 2020 and Course on Writing Memoranda and Letters (CWML) in August 2020.
