Junior Diplomats Undergo Basic Apprenticeship Program at Philippine Foreign Service Posts

The Foreign Service Institute (FSI), in partnership with the Department of Foreign Affairs–Human Resources Management Office (DFA-HRMO), conducted the Basic Apprenticeship Program on Diplomatic and Consular Practice as part of the Foreign Service Officers’ Cadetship Course (FSOCC) on 18-28 May 2016 at four foreign service posts, namely, Philippine embassies in Jakarta, Manama, and New Delhi and Philippine Consulate-General in Shanghai.

The program provided the new FSOs with knowledge and skills pertinent to foreign service work, equipped them with basic tools to enable them to meet these challenges, and prepared them for work in their future tours of duty.

The Cadets were given various opportunities to deepen their understanding of 1) the political, economic, and socio-cultural relations of the Philippines with the selected host countries; 2) the structure and operations of Philippine embassy or consulate; 3) the roles and responsibilities of a consular officer and an asistance-to-nationals (ATN) officer; 4) the necessary technical and knowledge skills to efficiently handle consular and ATN services at Post under the supervision of Consular/ATN Officer.

The participants were assisted by program managers from FSI and DFA-HRMO during the implementation of the apprenticeship program.
